Anne Marie Horn

July 18, 1927 — February 11, 2018

Anne Marie Horn, 90, of Wilkes-Barre, passed away peacefully on February 11, 2018, at Mercy Center Skilled Nursing Care, Dallas, surrounded by her loving children.

Born July 18, 1927, in Wilkes-Barre, she was the only daughter of Irish immigrants, the late James and Bridget Dougherty Boyle.

Anne Marie was a 1945 graduate of St. Mary's High School where she met the love of her life, George N. Horn. Prior to George boarding the train to head to war, George kissed the freshman Anne Marie, and their love story began. After four years of writing to each other, George returned from the war to marry Anne Marie. They wed in 1948 and celebrated 55 happy years together at their home in the East End section of Wilkes-Barre - the same home in which Anne Marie was born.

Upon graduating from high school, Anne Marie worked at Commercial Gas for several years before beginning her family. Once an only child, she became the matriarch of her large Irish-Catholic family. Anne Marie and George went on to have five wonderful children - James, Molly, Neil, Kathy, and Eileen. After raising her children, she returned to work as a switchboard operator at Professional Answering Services where she worked for the next 20 years. Anne Marie later worked in the lunch program at Mackin School for more than 15 years until the school closed.

Both Anne Marie and George were very proud of their Irish heritage. She was an active member of the Donegal Society since its inception. For twenty years, the couple also organized a yearly trip to the Irish Village at Cape Cod, and Irish music could be heard playing in their home all year long.

She was a lifelong parishioner of Holy Saviour Church in Wilkes-Barre where she could always be found in the last pew at 12 o'clock Sunday mass with her rosary and stack of novenas.

Anne Marie was preceded in death by her husband, George; her son, James; and her infant granddaughter, Mary Kate McGlynn.

She will be greatly missed by her daughter-in-law, Sharon Horn, Long Neck, Delaware; daughter, Molly Middleton and her husband, Joe, Laflin; son, Neil Horn and his wife Mary Ellen, Kingston; daughter, Kathleen McGlynn and her husband, Pat, Plains; and daughter, Eileen Siock and her husband, Bob, Mount Cobb.

Even though she was known affectionately as Nanny by many, her 12 grandchildren were the lucky few to have her as their actual grandmother. Her fun-loving, anything-goes personality will be greatly missed by her twelve grandchildren: Maura Horn and her husband, Ron Leonesio, Louisville, Colorado; Kerry Duffy and her husband, Tom, Thornton; Caitlin Sontowski and her husband, John, Aston; Eileen Brzoska and her husband, Dan, Austin, Texas; Patrick Scott and his wife, Mary, Doylestown; Meghan Upton and her husband, Dan, Kingston; Colleen Doyle and her husband, Patrick, Shavertown, Daniel Horn and his wife, Jacqueline, Kingston; Patrick McGlynn and his wife, Jill, Plains; Kelly McGlynn, Philadelphia; Annie Siock and Allie Siock, Mount Cobb. Anne Marie's pride and joy were her 15 great-grandchildren - Bridget, Brendan, and Shane Duffy, Molly and Keira Sontowski, William, George, and John Brzoska, Colin and Declan Scott, Liam and Cormick Upton, Claire and Tripp Doyle, and Sutton Horn. Anne Marie was also excited about the birth of great-grandchild #16, Baby McGlynn, due any day.

The family would like to thank Dr. Vincent Drapiewski for almost 50 years of excellent care.

Celebration of Anne Marie's life will begin with visitation on Thursday, February 15th from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at McLaughlin's, 142 South Washington Street in Wilkes-Barre. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, February 16th at 10 a.m. at SS Peter and Paul Church, Hudson Road, Plains. Interment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery.
