Bette Spellman, lifelong shopper and critic of society died Saturday in Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.
Born in Plains she was a daughter of the late James and Grace McCole Spellman.
For the past few years, Bette had resided with her sister in Marlboro Apartment in Wilkes-Barre. Before moving to the city, she lived in the family home in Plains.
Bette was a graduate of Plains Memorial High School.
Miss Spellman had been employed by the Lace Mill in North Wilkes-Barre and later held various positions as a member of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union. More recently, Bette worked for the Delta Hosiery store in Wilkes-Barre and performed clerical work for the United Way of Wyoming Valley.
Bette was a member of the Parish of Saint Mary of the Immaculate Conception and spent most of her life as a member of the Parish of the Sacred Heart in Plains.
A sister, Marian Garvin preceded her in death.
Surviving are a sister, Clare Holmes, at home and nephews, John Holmes of Wilkes-Barre and Preston Garvin of Ohio
Bette’s life will be celebrated in a prayer service on Wednesday at 10 AM in the Chapel at Saint Mary's Cemetery in Hanover Township. A Memorial Mass in Saint Mary of the Immaculate Conception Church will be scheduled for a later date.
