Brigid Murray O'Connor, 69, of Plains Township died Thursday, September 15, 2016.
Born October 5, 1946 in Ashley she was a daughter of the late Senator Martin L. Murray and Catherine Doyle Murray.
A graduate of Saint Leo's High School, Brigid earned her BA in elementary education from Misericordia University and MS in education and reading specialist certification from the University of Scranton.
Mrs. O'Connor taught in the Wilkes-Barre Area School District for fifteen years, retiring from Kistler Elementary School in 1982.
Brigid had a keen interest in local politics. She was appointed to the Board of Trustees of the Luzerne County Community College and subsequently became its first female chairperson. In 1995 she successfully campaigned for a seat on the Board of Commissioners of Plains Township. The longest serving female commissioner of a first class township in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, she entered her sixth consecutive term in January and attended her most recent meeting via telephone last week. Through her tenure she was instrumental in establishing and developing the summer camp program and served as chairperson of every department in the township at different times.
A member of the Parish of Saints Peter and Paul, she was also active with the Plains Township Senior Citizens' - Project Head and Plains Township Crime Watch.
Brigid will be greatly missed by her husband of forty-five years, Kevin M. O'Connor; son, Martin Patrick O'Connor of Windermere, Florida; sister, Katie DeAngelis of Hatboro; nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
Celebration of Brigid’s Life will begin Sunday with visitation from 5 to 8 PM in the Church of Saints Peter and Paul on Hudson Road in Plains and continue there Monday with visitation beginning at 10 AM followed by a Funeral Mass to be Celebrated at 11 AM. Interment will be in Saint Mary's Cemetery.
Memorial donations are preferred and may be made to Saints Peter and Paul Food Pantry.
