Carmen Mercadante, 82, a lifelong resident of Wilkes-Barre, passed away peacefully in the presence of his loving family at his home on Monday, November 13, 2023. He went to be with the Lord and reunited with his wife and "honey" of fifty-two years, Helen Mercadante.
Born December 2, 1940 in Wilkes-Barre he was a son of the late Anthony and Rosaria Nardone Mercadante.
Carmen was a lifelong resident of Wilkes-Barre, PA; He attended G.A.R. Memorial High School in Wilkes-Barre and honorably served in the US Army, 165th MP Battalion. Carmen was a hardworking man who owned businesses through the years, Mr. Blue Sanitation and Carmen & Son's Hauling. He also worked for Sunshine Markets, Sperazza IGA, Mr. Z's IGA, and Weis Markets, until he retired in 2017. After retirement, He continued to work for Malacari's produce and would do his famous side jobs with his son, Vince, until he was 81.
Carmen was known as Dad to his ten children, Pop or Poppy to his twenty-one grandchildren, and Mr. Merc to his neighbors and friends. Carmen found his greatest joy in his family and was an avid fan of the New York Yankees and Miami Dolphins. He enjoyed funny bantering and always knew how to get his kids going. While his kids were growing up, he was a devoted coach for youth football with the South Wilkes-Barre Mini Mohawks and St. Therese's Little League Baseball and served many years on the E.L. Meyers Wrestling Booster Club. Carmen spent his life as a proud dad and pop, never missing his kid's and grandkid's sporting events or activities while always making his presence known and never missing a picture. He knew what it was to be hardworking and dedicated to his family and God. Carmen was an active and devout member of the Church of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception.
Carmen was preceded in death by his siblings: Angeline Hughes, Rosemarie Perillo, Anthony Mercadante, Antoinette Mercadante, Josephine Farrell, and Joseph Mercadante.
His children: Carmen Jr. and wife, Linda, of Stroudsburg; Sonya and companion, Dale Bartnick, of Courtdale; Nina Ziomek, of Wethersfield, CT; Gina and husband, Jason McCloe, of Wilkes-Barre; Vince and wife, Jennifer, of Plains Township; Gino and wife, Katie, of Northampton; Anthony and wife, Kaycee, of Wilkes-Barre; Bianca and husband, Len Macking, of Wilkes-Barre; Carlo and wife, Brittany, of Forty Fort; Corinna, of Wilkes-Barre; along with grandchildren; brother, Phillip Mercadante, and his wife, Patricia, of Wilkes-Barre; numerous nieces and nephews, other family and friends will miss him very much.

Celebration of Carmen's Life begins Monday, November 20, 2023, with visitation from 1 to 4 PM and 6 to 9 PM at McLaughlin's, 142 South Washington Street in Wilkes-Barre. It continues there on Tuesday, November 21, 2023, with gathering at 9 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM in the Church of Saint Mary of the Immaculate Conception. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Mr. Merc's life.
Donations to the Helen Mercadante Foundation, St. Judes Children's Hospital, or Shriners Children's Hospital are preferred and will honor Carmen's memory.
