Sister Cecilia Meighan a member of the Mid-Atlantic Community of the Sisters of Mercy died at Mercy Center on Friday, September 12, 2014 after a brief illness.
As a Sister of Mercy, Sister Cecilia was an Associate Attorney with the Gallagher, Brennan and Gill Law Firm, President and member of the Faculty of Mount Aloysius College in Cresson, PA, a Teacher in the Scranton and Brooklyn Dioceses, a Provincial Councilor, Director of Plan Giving at Misericordia University, Director of the Institute of Law and Religious Life, a sister to Rosellen Meighan Garrett, and Sister Cecilia was a very good friend to many.
Under Sister Cecilia’s direction for the past twenty years, the Institute of Law and Religious Life at Misericordia, educates Religious Leaders both nationally and internationally and will continue to do so into the future. Misericordia University celebrated Sister Cecilia by naming the Institute in her honor.
Sister Cecilia was born October 29, 1933 in Wilkes-Barre and was baptized Marie Anne. She was the daughter of James and Rose Timony Meighan. She entered the Sisters of Mercy in Dallas, PA on September 9, 1951 and professed her vows on March 12, 1954.
Sister Cecilia graduated from St. Mary’s High School, obtained her Bachelors of Arts Degree in English at Misericordia University, a Master’s Degree in English at the University of Scranton, a Doctorate in Administration of Higher Education at Columbia University, and a Doctorate in Law from Georgetown University. Sister Cecilia was admitted to the Bar of the Supreme Court of the United States in 2005.
Misericordia University recently honored Sister Cecilia on her retirement after more than 57 years of dedicated service to the University. She received the Catherine McAuley Medal, the University’s highest honor at the 83rd Commencement. Sister Cecilia also received this award from Mount Aloysuis College in Cresson, PA where she served as President.
Sister Cecilia is survived by her sister Rosellen Meighan Garrett and the Sisters of Mercy.
The Celebration of her life will begin with a prayer service at Mercy Center Chapel in Dallas, PA on Tuesday, September 16 at 2:00 p.m. followed by visiting hours until 4:00p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Mercy Center on Wednesday, September 17 at 10:30 a.m. followed by burial at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carverton, PA.
