Claire Hart Cummings, 91, of South Franklin Street in Wilkes-Barre died peacefully in the presence of her loving family at her home on Sunday, June 6th.
Born May 15, 1919 in Wilkes-Barre she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Edna Callahan Hart.
A graduate of Saint Ann's Academy, Claire earned her Bachelor of Science degree from Misericordia University in 1941.
Shortly after graduation Claire married Walter Abell Cummings of Baltimore. When he was assigned overseas during World War II, she returned to Wilkes-Barre and joined her father in the operation of his real estate office. Claire was the second local woman to venture into the real estate field and was the first female Veterans Administration approved appraiser in the United States. She was president and owner of Tom Hart, Realtor at the time of her retirement.
A member of the Parish of Saint Mary of the Immaculate Conception, Claire served as a director of the Greater Wilkes-Barre Association of Realtors, Pennsylvania State Realtors Association, Family Service Association, League of Women Voters, Greater Wilkes-Barre Chamber of Commerce, and as president of the Misericordia University Alumni Association.
Her brother, Thomas Hart preceded her in death.
Surviving are her children, Chrysse Cummings Dow of Vero Beach, Florida, David Hart Cummings of Philadelphia, Henry Bogue Cummings of Allentown and Ellen T. Cummings of Wilkes-Barre; grandsons, Stephen Hart Dow and Michael Dow of Boston; and a sister, Margaret and her husband Frank Conaboy of Leesburg, Florida.
Celebration of Claire’s Life will be held Saturday, June 19th from 9 to 10:30 AM at McLaughlin's Family Funeral Service. Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated at 10:30 AM. Interment will be in Saint Mary's Cemetery in Hanover Township.
