Daniel J. Curran, PhD passed away on April 13, 2024, after a short illness.
Born October 27, 1928, in Brooklyn, New York, he was a son of the late Thomas and Mary Curran.
A graduate of Bishop Loughlin High School in Brooklyn, he received a bachelor of arts degree from Manhattan College. He earned a PhD in history from Fordham University, writing a dissertation focused on Pennsylvania politics in the mid-18th century. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
Dr. Curran moved to Wilkes-Barre in 1959 to teach history at King's College, a liberal arts college founded by the Holy Cross order. He was introduced to the love of his life, Patricia O'Connor, and they married in 1963. They raised five children as he continued to teach at King's, progressing to become a full professor.
He greatly loved teaching at King's and was a huge proponent of education as a means of personal advancement for the benefit of society. Dr. Curran shared this love of learning and curiosity with King's students for more than fifty years. In retirement, he continued to read multiple newspapers and journals daily and shared his knowledge and experience with his children and fifteen grandchildren.
His brothers, Thomas and John Curran, preceded him in death.
His wife of sixty-one years, Patricia; sons Thomas Curran, M.D., Daniel Curran, M.D., Patrick Curran, M.D., and Sean Curran, M.D.; daughter Patricia Curran, J.D.; fifteen grandchildren; other family and friends will miss him very much.
Celebration of Daniel's Life will take place in the Chapel of Christ the King, 29 West North Street in Wilkes-Barre, on Saturday, April 20, 2024. A gathering of Friends and Family will begin at 10 AM, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11 AM.
