Dolores McCue Dunleavy, 88, of Dallas, peacefully passed away in the presence of her loving family on Friday, August 11, 2023.
Born and raised in Wilkes-Barre, Dolores was the daughter of John and Maude Monahan McCue.
A graduate of Coughlin High School, Dolores married Michael Joseph Dunleavy, "the boy from down the street." Dolores often joked she didn't know she and Mike were dating until he sent her a full set of China dishes from Japan while he was deployed there.
Together, Dolores and Mike created a beautiful family and life in the East End section of Wilkes-Barre. While raising Michele, Maura, Michael, and James, Dolores was an employee of the Wilkes-Barre Area School District and an active member of Holy Savior Parish and the Donegal Society. Upon retirement, Dolores volunteered at Mercy Hospital.
Dolores's greatest joy in life came from spending time with her family. She was proud to be one of nine siblings who collectively coined the term Maude Squad. The Maude Squad enjoyed Sunday breakfast after Mass, the month of March in Florida, cashing in on Chicos and Talbots coupons and, most importantly, planning the next big family get-together.
But Dolores's favorite role was "Nanny." The grandmother to eleven, not a day went by that she didn't know what each of her grandchildren was up to. Nanny loved hearing their stories and sharing some of hers and Poppop Mike's, too.
Dolores was preceded in death by her husband, Michael Dunleavy; granddaughter Ava Dunleavy; brothers Jack, Donald and Paul McCue; sister Rita Cutter; and in-laws Kay McCue, Harry Dombroski, Don Gavigan, Paul Kane, William Cutter, Grace McCue and James and Claire Dunleavy.
Surviving are her children Michele and Jan Klaiss, Dallas, Maura and Brian Leighton, Wilkes-Barre, Michael and Christine Dunleavy, Wilkes-Barre, and James and Danielle Dunleavy, Wilkes-Barre; grandchildren Caila Klaiss, Christoper and Erica Klaiss, Lauren, Ashley and Brian Leighton, James, Nicholas, Nina and Ella Dunleavy, and Ashlynn Dunleavy; great-grandchild Charlotte Klaiss; sisters Connie Dombroski, Ann Marie Gavigan, and Sarah Kane; brother Dewey and Patty McCue; and thirty-three nieces and nephews and their families.
The Dunleavy family extends sincere thanks to Dr. Greenwald and the staff at John Heinz and the Allied Services Hospice Center.
Celebration of Dolores's Life begins Tuesday, August 15, 2023, with visitation from 4 to 7 PM at McLaughlin's, 142 South Washington Street in Wilkes-Barre. It continues there on Wednesday, August 16, 2023, with gathering at 8:30 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at 10 AM in the Church of Saint Maria Goretti, 46 Laflin Road in Laflin.
