Eileen Duffy Schmidt

October 12, 1917 — December 8, 2023

Eileen Duffy Schmidt, a lifetime resident of Sugar Notch, passed peacefully into eternal life on December 8, 2023. We are comforted by the lifetime of beautiful memories she left us.

Born October 12, 1917, she was a daughter of the late Philip P. Duffy, the borough police chief, and Bridget H. Kane Duffy.

Eileen was a graduate of Sugar Notch High School, Class of 1936. She worked in the Preparation and Circulation departments of the Osterhout Free Library in Wilkes-Barre for several years before her marriage. She always filled her home with family and friendship, making it a gathering place for generations.

Eileen was involved in the community in many ways. At Saint Charles Church, she was president and secretary of the Altar and Rosary Society, worked at parish bazaars, and was honored with locking the church doors for the final time upon its closing. She was also a former Lioness of the Twin Boro Lioness Club and a member of the Christian Mothers at Holy Family Parish.

She is preceded in death by her husband of sixty-four years, Harold A. Schmidt, on May 4, 2009; her son, Thomas F. Schmidt, on May 12, 1986; sisters Mary, Margaret, and Hannah, and brothers Philip P. and James D. Duffy.

Eileen is survived by her children Francis and his wife Tama Schmidt, Mary and her husband John Lenahan, Margaret and her husband Paul Viti, and John and his wife Nadine Schmidt; grandchildren, Jeffrey and his wife Jolene Schmidt, Erica and her husband Bobby Hand, Katilyn Viti, Thomas Schmidt and his fiancée Makia Stocker, and Michael Schmidt; sister Zita Speer; nieces, nephews, and other family and friends.

Celebration of Eileen's life will take place Thursday, December 14, 2023, with a Funeral Mass at 11 AM in the Church of Saint Leo the Great, 33 Manhattan Street in Ashley.

Eileen's family extends special thanks to the entire staff at Smith Health Care and Dr. Wolanin for their professional and compassionate care.
