Elaine Theresa Coburn, 66, passed away in the presence of her family at Celtic Hospice on October 20, 2015.
Born April 16, 1949 in Wilkes-Barre, a daughter of the late Dr. John C. and Genevieve Douty Brady, Elaine was a devout Catholic and a member of the Church of Saint Aloysius throughout her life.
A 1967 graduate of Meyers High School, Elaine earned her BA in psychology from Rosemont College in 1971. Later in life, she attended Marywood University on the graduate level and received certificates for Special Education and Reading Specialist.
In 1972, she married Robbie Coburn, her husband of forty-three years. Together they raised three children, Craig, Matthew and Emily. Prior to entering the workforce, she was fortunate to stay at home while the children were growing up and was able to devote time to volunteerism. She was very active in the Parents’ Club of Saint Aloysius School and served as a board member and officer of the Bishop Hoban Parents’ Club. She was past president of the Greater Wilkes-Barre Jay-C-Ettes, the women’s auxiliary of the Greater Wilkes-Barre JayCees. Elaine was also a board member, officer and active sustaining member of the Junior League of Wilkes-Barre.
Upon entering the world of work, Elaine was employed by South Wilkes-Barre Playschool for nine years and then worked for the Luzerne Intermediate Unit 18 until her retirement in 2013. During her time at the IU she had the privilege of working with students with disabilities and special needs to make a transition from high school to adult life.
A sister, Patricia Egidio preceded her in death in 1989.
Elaine will be greatly missed by her husband, Rob; children, Craig and his wife Jessica of Anthem, Arizona, Matthew and his wife Amy Bustin of Philadelphia, and Emily Shields and her husband Ken of York; grandchildren, Ethan and Cecelia Coburn, Jack, Grace and Caroline Coburn, and Tyler and Connor Shields; sister, Maureen Beck and her husband Rich of Benton; brothers, Michael Brady and his wife Jane of Columbus, Ohio and Jack Brady of Wilkes-Barre; nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
Elaine’s entire family thanks the Celtic Hospice and Home Health Care doctors, nurses and staff; Jeffrey Gryn, MD, Jennifer Pierce, PA, the nurses and staff at Hematology and Oncology Associates, Jeffrey Pierce, MD, Geisinger CMC Interventional Radiology nurses and technicians, and Joseph Anistranski, MD, Marnetta Bradford, CRNP and the nurses and staff at Hanover Family Practice for their care and concern during her illness; and her supportive family members and wonderful friends for their donations of meals during these trying times.
Celebration of Elaine’s Life will begin Friday with visitation from 4 to 7 PM at McLaughlin’s, 142 South Washington Street in Wilkes-Barre and continue Saturday with a Funeral Mass at 10 AM in the Church of Saint Aloysius, Barney and Division Streets in Wilkes-Barre.
