Elizabeth “Betty” Green passed away Monday, July 23, 2012 at Castle Rock Convalescent Center in Green River, Wyoming, surrounded by the love and prayers of her family near and far. Mrs. Green was a long-time resident of Wilkes-Barre and Kingston, and lived in Rock Springs, Wyoming for the past six years. Mrs. Green had been in ill health for the past several years, but her illness never took away her pleasant spirit, her energy to keep going, or her beautiful smile.
Born November 18, 1927 in Wilkes-Barre she was a daughter of the late Michael and Anna Hassay of the North End section of the city.
Betty was a 1945 graduate of James M. Coughlin High School, where she focused on business and being a baton twirling majorette. She married her lifelong sweetheart, Daniel “Skip” Green, in 1946 after completing his service in World War II.
Mrs. Green worked in the payroll and accounting field throughout her career. Her favorite jobs were for WBRE-TV, a local NBC affiliate, and the F.M. Kirby Center for the Performing Arts, where she interacted with stage, screen and TV performers and personalities. She also participated in the family wholesale business and did private accounting for several private and non-profit associations.
During her lifetime Betty enjoyed being with her immediate and extended family, ice skating well into her 70’s, domestic and international travel, the beach, shopping, and acquiring high-heeled shoes, unique clothing and many, many other collections. Her life was enriched by nieces and nephews who cared for her, cooked for her, visited, transported her and kept her on her toes and laughing. Her “daughter in spirit”, Kathy, was always a welcomed addition to the family. In her later years, Betty’s quality of life was better because of her faithful and untiring Senior Companion, Ethel Nauman of Rock Springs, who kept her on the go and involved in community events as long as possible. She was a long time member of the Parish of Saint Ignatius Loyola in Kingston and a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Community and Young at Heart Senior Citizens Center in Rock Springs, Wyoming.
Her husband, Dan died in 1991, and her sons, Michael died in 1958 and Daniel died in 1993. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Joseph, Mickey, and Larry Hassay, and her sister, Agnes “Aggie” Heylek.
She will be greatly missed by her daughter, Patricia and husband Corey Brown of Rock Springs, Wyoming, and three faithful and devoted grandchildren, Sarah Brown and husband Joel Hanes of Centerville, Utah, Emily and husband Dustin Wallis of Salt Lake City, Utah and Christopher Brown, of Ogden, Utah. She is also survived by her sister, Marie and husband, Norb Kosin of Wilkes-Barre and their ten caring children; sisters-in-law, Marion Hassay of Wilkes-Barre, and Nancy Hassay of Houston, Texas and their children; and special nieces now in New York, Virginia, Oklahoma and Louisiana, and several other nieces and nephews around the country.
Celebration of Betty’s Life will be held Friday at 8:30 AM from McLaughlin’s – The Family Funeral Service, 142 South Washington Street in Wilkes-Barre with Funeral Mass at 9:30 AM in the Church of Saint Ignatius Loyola. Interment will be in Saint Mary’s Cemetery in Hanover Township.
Visitation will be held at McLaughlin’s on Thursday from 5 to 7 PM.
