Ernestine Funke Farrell

July 20, 2009 — September 11, 2009

Ernestine Funke Farrell, 99, died Friday at Manor Care in Cherry Hill, New Jersey after a brief illness.

A most loving and devoted mother and homemaker, she will be dearly missed by her family. Her warmth, generosity and the ever present gleam in her eyes were a constant source of joy to all she touched. A great comfort to her and her loved ones was her abiding devotion to her Catholic faith.

Born and raised in Ashley, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Helene Hendler Funke.

After graduating from Trinity College in Washington, DC, Ernestine worked as a buyer for Macy’s in New York City for a number of years.

Returning to the Wyoming Valley, she immersed herself in her lifelong passion for painting. Active in the Wyoming Valley Art League, she was recognized for her coal mine landscapes, being commissioned by the UMWA to paint a centerpiece for their headquarters in Washington, DC.

Ernestine was predeceased by her son Thomas Francis Farrell, III and is survived by her daughter-in-law, Dr. Lucille Farrell, of Haddonfield, NJ; nieces Jennifer Noell of West Orange, NJ and Erika Funke of Kingston, and nephews Carl Funke of Ridgewood, NJ and Peter Funke of Wyndmoor.

A private service will be held at the family mausoleum in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Hanover Township where she will be entombed.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Wyoming Valley Art League, 47 North Franklin Street, Wilkes Barre, 18701-1311.
