Evelyn Merwarth

January 24, 1933 — June 13, 2011

Evelyn Conlon Merwarth, 78, formerly of Wilkes-Barre passed away peacefully at her home in Garden City, New York on Monday, June 13th.

Born January 24, 1933 in Wilkes-Barre she was the daughter of the late Charles and Evelyn McGinley Conlon, and one of many grandchildren of the late John ‘Pop’ Conlon of Conlon Coal Company.

Lynn was a loving sister to John & Charles Conlon who preceded her in death.

Lynn was a student at Wyoming Seminary and Endicott College, and worked in advertising in Boston and Manhattan in her younger years.

While raising her two girls, Lynn was quite active in Girl Scouts, the local PTA and library board before returning to a full-time position as an ophthalmology department secretary at Winthrop University Hospital, where she worked for more than twenty-five years utilizing her innate organizational skills.

She was a lover of the arts and quite artistic in her own right, whereby her talents shone through in her home making. There were many needlepoint, decoupage, calligraphy, painting and baking projects which she organized with all the neighborhood children.

She loved the ocean, taught her girls to swim almost before they could walk, and treated them to years of great days on the water. She was a brilliant, well-read woman who knew so many abstract things in life and had a memory like an elephant; her funny Irish dillies and detailed family stories will be greatly missed. She had beautiful, soft brown eyes that spoke volumes: truly the window to the soul. You could tell when she was getting to the punch line in her long ‘stories‘, because there was a distinct sparkle which would appear as the conclusion would descend. She would do anything for anyone, was a great conversationalist and instant friend to all she met in life’s path.

Lynn loved all animals very much, especially dogs. She suffered from MS, yet never complained of her illness, instead always hoping she would recover one day. It is a terribly awful disease yet she maintained her dignity throughout each stage and was a trouper to the end.

Lynn accomplished more in this life than she would give herself credit for and will be greatly missed by her husband James E.H. Merwarth, daughters Jennifer Merwarth and Cynthia Merwarth DeBari, her grandsons, James and Samuel, and her great-granddaughter, Harper Lynn.

Celebration of Lynn’s Life will be held Saturday from 11 AM to 1 PM at McLaughlin’s, 142 South Washington Street in Wilkes-Barre. Interment will be in Saint Mary’s Cemetery in Hanover Township.

Memorial donations are preferred and may be made to SPCA or National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
