Francis “Finny” Grogan, of Wilkes-Barre, passed away Friday, June 19, 2015, at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.
Born March 10, 1925 in Pringle he was a son of the late Thomas and Clara Griffin Grogan.
Francis served our country honorably as a veteran of the U.S. Navy in World War II. He was a gunner’s mate on the USS Terror.
Francis worked for Martz Trailways in Wilkes-Barre as a driver and then a mechanic for fifty years before retiring.
Francis was an avid gardener and was most happy spending time in his yard. His nickname in the neighborhood was the “Mayor of Carlisle Street” as he would spend most of his time working on the block sweeping the street and sharing flowers.
Family and his neighbors were most important to Francis and he always had a kind word for everyone.
He was preceded in death by his wife Mary, with whom he celebrated their 59th anniversary on May 4th prior to her death, and a daughter-in-law, Jane Grogan; sisters Kitty Welsh and her husband Harry, nephew Kevin, Wilkes-Barre; Claire Fisher and her husband Mulford, Elkin’s Park nephews Mulford Fisher 3rd, Atlanta GA and Marty Fisher, Boulder CO; brothers James, Wilkes-Barre; John, Forty Fort; Eugene, Mount Holly, NJ; Edward, Wilkes-Barre; Tom, Luzerne.
Francis will be greatly missed by sons, William Grogan of Kingston and David Grogan and his wife, Linda, Exeter; granddaughter, Tracy Grogan and her husband, Kevin Spector; sister, Marie Roth, niece Eileen Roth, Wilkes-Barre and great-nephew, Michael Roth, Philadelphia; niece, Patty Grogan, Forty Fort; niece, Carol Kasalavage and great-nieces Alyssa and Lauren, Wilkes-Barre; nephew, James Grogan, his wife Ann and great-niece Francesca, Anaheim, CA; niece, Brenda Nowalis and great-niece Sarah, Kingston; niece, Catherine Gallagher and great-nephew Joshua, Bear Creek; nephew, Michael Grogan; niece, Molly Greer, her husband David, great-nephew AJ and great-niece Jessica, Burlington, NJ; nephew, Michael Fisher and his wife Sally, Boulder, CO; niece, Diane Welsh, great-nephew, Sean Welsh, Wilkes-Barre and great-niece Colleen Rusinko, Sweet Valley; nephew, Ed Grogan and his wife Ann, Baltimore, MD. Francis had a large, loving family with many more nieces and nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends.
Celebration of Francis' Life will be held with a Funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m. Saturday in the Church of Saint Aloysius, Barney and Division streets in Wilkes-Barre.
