James F. Jiunta, 93, of Wilkes-Barre peacefully passed away on Monday, December 18, 2017.
Born February 21, 1924 in Pittston he was a son of the late Joseph and Bridget Latona Giunta.
Jim attended Pittston schools until the family relocated to Wilkes-Barre where he graduated from Coughlin High School in 1942.
An Army veteran of World War II, he was assigned to the Paratroopers at Fort Benning, Georgia and served with the 82nd Airborne Division and the 300th Field Hospital.
Jim continued his education at Temple University School of Pharmacy where he graduated with honors.
He owned and operated Jiunta’s Pharmacy for more than forty years before retiring in 1988, and was honored with many awards through his career, including Pharmacist of the Year.
A member of the Parish of Saint Nicholas, he was a long-time member of the Parish of Saint Therese where he was in the Usher’s Club. Jim was a member of the Bishop William J. Hafey Assembly, Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus Council 302. He was an avid bowler, golfer, and runner.
A grandson, Kris Pisarcik, brothers, Charles Giunta and Martin Jiunta, and sisters, Mary Supplee and her husband Vic, and Stella Speziale and her husband Sam preceded him in death.
Jim will be greatly missed by his wife of sixty-five years, Columbia Guarnieri Jiunta; children, Dr. James and his wife Virginia Jiunta, Dr. Thomas and his wife Mary Jiunta, and Gail Pisarcik and her fiancé Dr. Richard Frey; grandchildren, James Collin Jiunta, Dr. Michael Jordan Jiunta, Dr. Justin Jiunta, Katie Jiunta, Sarah Jiunta Kalnoskas and her husband Russ, and David Pisarcik; great-granddaughter, Juliet; brother, Patrick Jiunta; sisters-in-law, Nancy Giunta and Fran Jiunta; brother-in-law, Thomas Guarnieri; nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
Celebration of Jim’s Life will begin Thursday with visitation from 4 to 7 PM at McLaughlin’s, 142 South Washington Street in Wilkes-Barre and continue there on Friday with gathering at 8:30 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at 9:30 AM in the Church of Saint Nicholas. Entombment will be in Saint Mary’s Mausoleum.
