Following his war service, Jim was employed for twenty-two years by Metropolitan and Provident Mutual life insurance companies.
In 1953, he and the former Clare Dickert celebrated their wedding and started their family together. They moved to Wilkes-Barre in 1959 and Jim started his career in public service, joining the staff of City Hall under former City Manager Bernard Gallagher. He then served under four mayors; Frank Slattery, Walter Lisman, Tom McLaughlin and Lee Namey.
Jim was Administrator of Housing and Rehabilitation and, in 1981, was named Director of the Office for Community Development. In 1986, he was named City Administrator, serving until 1988, at which time he returned to the Office of Community Development. He retired from Wilkes-Barre City government in 1989 and returned to the private workforce to become credit manager for Eastern Insurance Group of Wilkes-Barre until his retirement.

His Irish pride contributed to his being named “The Friendly Son of the Year” in 2002 and Grand Marshal of the Wilkes-Barre Saint Patrick’s Day Parade in 2004. And his enduring faith contributed to his award honoring forty years of attendance from the L.J. Ferdinand Men of Malvern.
