James Joseph O'Donnell, 65, formerly of Horton Street and Plymouth Avenue in Wilkes-Barre died Thursday at his home in Mount Laurel, New Jersey.
Born 17 April 1944 in Mountain Top, he was the son of the late Joseph and Rose Harris O'Donnell.
Joe was a 1963 graduate of G.A.R. Memorial High School.
He joined the Army and served two tours of duty, from 1963-66 and 1966-67, in Vietnam. Joe earned the rank of Sergeant and was awarded the Air Medal for heroism during a combat flight mission.
After being honorably discharged from the Army, Joe joined the Operating Engineers Local 542, working with them from 1967 to 1984. He was employed by the United States Postal Service for twenty-two years before retiring in 2007. Joe was elected and served as General President of the Wilkes-Barre Area Local 175, American Postal Workers Union for fourteen years.
He is survived by his wife of forty-two years, the former Tuyet Tran. Children, Rose and her husband James Panaia of Cherry Hill, New Jersey, Joseph O'Donnell of New York City, Sandra and her husband Brian Shadduck of Mount Laurel, New Jersey and Michael O'Donnell of Philadelphia. Grandchildren, Skylar Shadduck and Julia Panaia. Sisters, Catherine Lavery of Wilkes-Barre and Rose Mary Mulcahy of Vincentown, New Jersey.
Funeral will be held Monday at 09:30 AM from McLaughlin Family Funeral Service 142 South Washington Street, Wilkes-Barre with Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM in Church of Saint Aloysius. Interment will be in Locustwood Cemetery in Cherry Hill, New Jersey.
