Joan Walsh

Joan Alicia Walsh, 80, of Wilkes-Barre and formerly of Harvey’s Lake died Friday at Riverstreet Manor.

Born April 14, 1929 in Wilkes-Barre she was a daughter of the late Joseph M. and Agnes Gilligan Walsh.

Joan was a 1946 graduate of Saint Mary's High School. She earned her BA in Fine Arts and Anthropology from American University in Washington, D.C. and both an MA in Art History and Elementary Teaching Credential from San Francisco State University.

Joan’s professional life included working at the Washington office of the Congress of Industrial Organization (CIO) and as teacher and principal at the Brandeis Day School in San Francisco. She also served as Art Curator at the George Meany Center for Labor Studies in Silver Spring, Maryland.

After working and raising a family in San Francisco, in 1983 Joan returned to her home town where she was involved in local theatre and volunteered with the Cultural Council of Luzerne County.

Surviving are brothers Philip Walsh of Wilkes-Barre and Father James Walsh, S.J., of Washington D.C., sister Phyllis Powell of Wapwallopen, son Peter Goldman of Vallejo, California, daughter Meg Goldman of Seattle, Washington, two grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Joan's family will celebrate her life in a private memorial gathering and there will be no calling hours.
