Margaret Elko a resident of Elizabeth Street Wilkes-Barre died Wednesday at Timber Ridge Health Care Center, Plains.
Born May 25, 1918 in Wilkes-Barre she was the daughter of the late Jacob and Mary Obester Mekelyta. Margaret was a graduate of Coughlin High School and also the Wyoming Seminary Dean School of Business.
She had been employed by the United States War Department in Washington D.C. during the Second World War. After her husband George completed his military service they returned to make their home in Wilkes-Barre where they raised their daughter Patricia.
Margaret had been employed by Martz Bus Co. and later at the Bon-Ton Department Store until her retirement. Most recently she had been a volunteer employee at the Mercy Hospital Gift Shop where she had been a recipient of an award honoring her dedicated service.
She had been a member of St. Therese Church in Wilkes-Barre until its recent closing.
Margaret was predeceased by her husband George in 1998 and also her sisters Anne Locke, Irene Waller and Mildred Postupack.
Surviving are a daughter Patricia Gazenski and her husband Rick, Wilkes-Barre, Grandchildren Lori Brittingham and her husband Larry Willow Grove; Jay Bottger and his wife Chris, Wilkes-Barre and Lynn Blazaskie and her husband Mike, Hanover Twp. Great grandchildren Larry and Brandon Brittingham; Sarah, Luke, Josh and James Bottger, Michael and Lauren Blazaskie along with several nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Margaret’s life will be held Saturday morning at 8:30 from McLaughlin’s-The Family Funeral Service 142 S. Washington St. Wilkes-Bare Pa. A funeral mass will be held at 9:30 in Exaltation of the Holy Cross Church, Hanover Twp., Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery Hanover Twp.
