Margaret Anne Whalen Rooney, 90, a former resident of Washington Square Apartments with her husband, Thomas Rooney died on Mother’s Day, May 12, 2013 at River Street Manor.
Born April 27, 1923 in Wilkes-Barre she was a daughter of the late William and Elizabeth Jordan Whalen.
Margaret was a graduate of Saint Mary’s High School.
Margaret worked at Nepera Chemical Company of Harriman, New York for many years, the Internal Revenue Service in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and retired from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York.
A member of the Parish of Our Lady of Fatima, she was a communicant at the Church of Saint Mary of the Immaculate Conception.
Her husband, Thomas J. Rooney, Sr. died on March 12, 2013, exactly two months earlier. An infant daughter, Mary Elizabeth; brothers, John, William, Robert and Edward Whalen; sisters, Mary McDade and Rose Klug; son-in-law, John Ferris; brother-in-law, William J Rooney; and sisters-in-law, Sr. Marie Rooney, IHM and Sr. Wilma Rooney, IHM also preceded her in death.
She will be greatly missed by her children, William Rooney of Forest Hill, Maryland, Thomas J. and his wife Carol Rooney of Walden, New York, Michael Rooney of Middletown, New York, John Rooney of Green Valley, California and Frank and his wife Tracey Rooney of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Nancy Ferris of Goshen, New York, Patricia and her husband Richard Gilappo of Corona, California, Jane and her husband Patrick Barkley of Oakland Park, Florida; fifteen grandchildren and one great grandson who adored their Grammy; sister-in-law, Peg Ronky of Reading, Pennsylvania; nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
Celebration of Margaret’s life will be held Friday, May 17, 2013 with a Funeral Mass at 9:30am in the Church of Saint Mary of the Immaculate Conception, 130 South Washington Street in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. Interment will be in Saint Mary’s Cemetery.
