Mary Margaret Maiers Kratz, affectionately known as Nana, 87, of Sugar Notch died Wednesday at Mercy Center in Dallas.
Born November 4, 1924 in Sugar Notch she was a daughter of the late John S. and Margaret Caffrey Maiers.
Mary attended Saint Charles Borromeo Elementary School and graduated from Sugar Notch High School in 1942.
After graduation she worked for the Department of the Navy in Washington, D.C. She later worked for Fowler, Dick & Walker, The Boston Store until her retirement.
Mary will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, Nana and loving caregiver. She was an accomplished baker and candy maker who also enjoyed doing needlework and crossword puzzles.
Mary was a member of the Parish of Saint Leo/Holy Rosary in Ashley.
Her beloved husband of fifty years, Nicholas J. Kratz died June 29, 1997. A brother, John S. Maiers also preceded her in death.
She will be greatly missed by her children, Nicholas and his wife Juliann of Sugar Notch, John and his wife Cathy of Ashley and Mary and her husband Stan Vitale of Glassboro, New Jersey; eight grandchildren, Nicholas, JoAnn, Maura (Matthew Banford), John (Carmel), Ann (Brian O’Donnell), Patrick (Jen), Christopher and Timothy; six great-grandchildren, Abbey Kratz, Matthew and Mary Kate Banford, Emma and Molly Kratz, and Norah O’Donnell; sister, Claire Karpuk of Cherry Hill, New Jersey; and nieces and nephews.
Mary's family is grateful to the staff of Mercy Center Skilled Nursing Unit and Hospice of the Sacred Heart for their kind and compassionate care.
Celebration of Mary’s Life will be held Saturday at 8:30 AM from McLaughlin’s – The Family Funeral Service, 142 South Washington Street in Wilkes-Barre with Funeral Mass at 9:30 AM in the Church of Saint Leo the Great. Interment will be in Saint Mary's Cemetery in Hanover Township.
Visitation will be held at McLaughlin's on Friday from 6 to 8 PM.
