Mary Therese McCabe, formerly from East End in Wilkes-Barre, passed away in Tampa, Florida on May 24, 2024.
Mrs. McCabe was the daughter of the late Gerard and Mary O'Donnell Lupien. She was born on May 13, 1942, at Fort Benning Army Hospital, Georgia.
She graduated from Holy Saviour School and was valedictorian of her Saint Mary's High School class. She earned a BS in Elementary Education from College Misericordia and an MS in Elementary Education from the University of Scranton.
Mary Therese served as a lay minister for the Diocese of Mobile/Birmingham, Alabama, and then as a teacher in Pensacola, Florida, and Saint Nicholas Elementary School in Wilkes Barre. She was then employed by the Wilkes-Barre Area School District for thirty-one years as a teacher and head teacher in the Grant Street School and the Heights Murray Elementary School, from which she retired.
Mary Therese was a member of the Parish of Holy Saviour, where she served as a Eucharistic Minister until its merger. She then became a parishioner of Saint Andre Bessette until its closure, when she joined the Parish of Saints Peter and Paul.
Mary Therese was proud of her Irish heritage and made eight trips to Ireland, mainly to County Donegal, where her grandparents emigrated. She enjoyed visiting with her many relatives throughout Donegal, including visiting the homes where her grandparents had lived. Mary Therese also enjoyed attending concerts by Daniel O'Donnell and other Irish entertainers, especially with her sister and best friend, Peggy.
Her husband, Francis J. McCabe, Sr., who served as organist at Holy Savior Church for forty-two years, died on October 11, 2008. Her brother, Alfred Lupien, and sister, Patricia Lupien Mitchell, also preceded her in death.
Her son Francis J. McCabe, Jr. and his wife Mariah, and grandchildren Molly Rose and Nicholas James McCabe, all of Temple Terrace, Florida; sisters, Peggy and her husband Robert Neher of Shavertown and Elizabeth Zara of Orlando, Florida; brother Gerard and his wife Micheline Lupien of Buffalo, New York; nieces, nephews, other family and friends will miss her very much.
Celebration of Mary Therese's Life will take place on Monday, June 3, 2024. Visitation will begin at 9 AM at McLaughlin's, 142 South Washington Street in Wilkes-Barre, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11 AM in the Church of Saints Peter and Paul, 13 Hudson Road in Plains.
Donations to Saint Vincent de Paul Kitchen, P.O. Box 1088, Wilkes-Barre, PA 18703, are preferred and will honor Mary Therese's memory.
