Maureen Hoegen

Maureen Therese McGovern Hoegen, 71, of Kingston Township passed away peacefully at her home after a lengthy illness on Monday afternoon, September 26, 2011.

Born October 5, 1939 in Carbondale she was the daughter of the late Joseph Dennis and Helen McGivern McGovern.

Maureen was a 1957 graduate of Saint Rose High School in Carbondale and earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Georgetown University in 1961.

A devoted wife and mother, Maureen balanced her family life with a nursing career and volunteering for social causes over many years. In her early career, she served as a public health nurse in Washington, D.C. and also worked as a Clinical Nursing Instructor at Saint Joseph’s Hospital in South Bend, Indiana and at College Misericordia in Dallas. For many years, Maureen was active in the Pro-Life Movement in Northeastern Pennsylvania and also served on the Bishop’s Commission on Ecumenism and Human Affairs in the Diocese of Scranton.

Maureen and her husband, Peter J. Hoegen, celebrated fifty years of marriage on June 17, 2011. The occasion was marked with a family celebration as well as a Mass at Immaculate Conception Church in West Pittston, where Pete Hoegen serves as a Deacon in Corpus Christi Parish.

Her brother, Dennis McGovern died January 10, 2003.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, are her children; Frank and his wife Molly Hoegen of Kingston, Rose and her husband Joe Curtin of Richmond, Virginia, Katie and her husband Bob Arensmeyer of Kingston, Joe Hoegen of Carlisle and Dan and his wife Amy Hoegen of Kingston Township; grandchildren, Kristin Curtin Sherrow of Patterson, California, Joseph, Margaret, John Paul, Mary Clare and Peter Curtin of Richmond, Virginia, Sara and Lael Hoegen of Kingston, Robert and Beth Arensmeyer of Kingston, Morgan Hoegen of Carlisle, Jacob and Stephen Hoegen of Kingston Township; great-grandsons, Michael and Caleb Sherrow of Patterson, California.

Maureen’s entire family is grateful for the devoted medical professionals who were active in her care at home during her illness, especially Dr. David Greenwald and Dr. David Mouallem, along with Heather and Cindy from Hospice Care of the VNA.

Celebration of Maureen’s Life will be held Wednesday at 2 PM with Funeral Mass in Immaculate Conception Church, 605 Luzerne Avenue, West Pittston.

Visitation will be held at the church beginning at noon on Wednesday.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Medical Oncology Associates Prescription Assistance Fund, 382 Pierce Street, Kingston, PA 18704; or to St. Vincent De Paul Kitchen, Catholic Social Services, 33 East Northampton Street, Wilkes-Barre, PA 18701.
