Thomas J. Nauss, M.D., 96, formerly of Spring Brook Township died Thursday at Mercy Center in Dallas.
Born February 20, 1918 in Plymouth he was a son of the late Henry and Catherine Molyneux Nauss.
A 1936 graduate of Meyers High School, Dr. Nauss earned his baccalaureate degree from Penn State University and doctorate in medicine from the University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Nauss completed his internship at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital where he met and later married his beloved wife, the former Mary Jones of Old Forge. After their wedding on March 2, 1946 they relocated to Houston where Dr. Nauss was stationed with the Army. While in Houston, he was introduced to plastic and reconstructive surgery beginning a passion for the field.
Returning to this area, Dr. Nauss opened a cleft palate clinic in Scranton to offer comprehensive patient services otherwise only available in large cities.
Dr. Nauss was the first board certified plastic surgeon in Northeastern Pennsylvania and travelled extensively lecturing on the benefits of plastic surgery and its techniques. His practice maintained offices in Wilkes-Barre and Scranton for nearly forty years at the time of his retirement.
Sisters, Mary Mesharer and Claire Stock and a brother, Joseph Nauss preceded him in death.
He will be greatly missed by his wife, Mary; sister, Kathleen Burke of Moorestown, New Jersey; nieces and nephews, Mary Jane Savakinas, Judy Coach, Michael Mesharer, Eileen Mesharer, James Burke, Jr., Kathy Burke, Molly Pensiero, Patty Savage, Ann Clark, Tom Burke, Kevin Stock, Tim Stock, Maureen Celiberti, Sue Nauss and Kathleen Diamond.
Mrs. Nauss is grateful for the loving, compassionate care Dr. Nauss received from the staff at Mercy Center and the Sisters of Mercy.
A Funeral Mass was celebrated at Mercy Center in Dallas on December 22, 2014.
Celebration of Thomas’ Life will be held Saturday, May 16, 2015 with gathering beginning at 11 AM at McLaughlin’s, 142 South Washington Street in Wilkes-Barre and Graveside services with military honors at 12 PM at Saint Mary’s Cemetery.
