William Goeckel Mulligan of Doylestown, PA and Naples, FL passed away at home in Pennsylvania on the 19th of December. Bill will be lovingly remembered by his wife of thirty-six years, Eileen, and by his brothers, Gene Mulligan and Bob Mulligan, and his sisters, Mary Lou MacFarland and Joan Weber, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws.
Bill was born to Marion (Goeckel) Mulligan and Eugene W. Mulligan of Kingston, PA. After graduating from Kingston High School in 1948, he went on to Lafayette College in Easton, PA where he earned a BS in Mining Engineering.
Upon graduation, Bill began a career of forty-three years with Ingersoll-Rand Co. reaching the office of Executive Vice President. Along with his position at I-R, Bill participated in several outside associations, achieving the honor of chairman for ARTBA, AEM and IRF. Bill retired in 1995 and continued with his "second career" in harness racing. He had a lifelong interest in horses having been introduced to it early on by his father. He participated in amateur driving and was on the board of the Harness Racing Museum and Hall of Fame in later years. The culmination of Bill's racing interests came with the award for 2016 Pennsylvania Breeder of the Year by the Harness Writers Association.
Celebration of Bill’s Life will begin Thursday, December 28th with visitation from 4:30 to 7:30 PM at McLaughlin’s, 142 South Washington Street in Wilkes-Barre and continue with a Funeral Mass on Friday, December 29th at 10:30 AM in the Church of Saint Ignatius Loyola in Kingston. Interment will follow in Saint Mary’s Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bill's memory to the American Heart Association, National Kidney Foundation, Kings College Scholarship Funds, or Standardbred Retirement Foundation.
